a. Asthma Control Program-Asthma Club - planned and conceived in 1998,
the Asthma Club has been an important source of support both for medicines
as well as education for those afflicted with this disease. The club's
regular meetings have made asthmatics fell a sense of belonging and strength
through group support. Management of the disease also has become much
easier as education on proper use of gadgets were done.
b. Community Medicine Program -since 1995, the department, in response
to the thrust of the hospital as a facility without walls, adopted Barangay
Tungkalan in Toril, Davao City for its Community Medicine Program. Since
then, the department has been actively involved in training the Barangay
Health Workers (BHW") to make self sufficient in answering first
aid and early recognition of medical emergencies. The department has also
been very active in community-based research as well as in involving the
barangay in its environmental protection projects.
c. Birthing Home- established in coordination with the Department of
Obstetrics and Gynecology, the unit is a model of primary obstetrics that
is cost-effective. It also aims to to train and upgrade skills of midwives,
"hilots" and primary care physicians in low-risk obstetric care.
d. Environmental Protection Program - Its projects were the planting
of trees on a watershed area at a mountainous part of Barangay Tungkalan
in Toril, Davao City and the Adopt-An-Endangered-Tree community-based
projects which advocated the importance of environmental protection. One
of its Endangered-Tree project which aimed on making each family in the
target "barangay" adopt at least one Molave tree seedling to
be nourished and taken cared of.
e. Family Health Care Program - this holistic program is an integral
part in the training of Family Practice residents. It provides an oppurtunity
for residents to experience continuity of care. Patients and their families
enrolled in the program are cared by residents from first year up to fourth
year of his residency training. It also provide an oppurtunity for residents
to apply the principles of Family Medicine to their patients.
f. Geriatric Health Care Program - conceived just at the start of year
2002, this newest addition to the ever-growing list of programs and services
of the department aims to answer the needs of one of the most marginalized
sector of the community, the elderly. The department positions itself
to champion the cause of the more mature population among us and make
the hospital not just baby friendly but also elderly friendly. With its
theme "Embracing Aging with Joy", the program aims to maximize
self-confidence and quality of life for the older generation and give
them the priviledges they deserve.
g. Hospice Care Program - In coordination with the Oncology Section of
the Department of Medicine, the program aims to provide quality care ang
quality of life terminally ill patients.
h. NTP - Davao Chest Club - through the efforts of the resident coordinators
from the department, a patients' club named Davao Chest Club was establshed
and was registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in
1998. Today, the club works to coordinate treatment of patients with Tuberculosis
and the health care providers of the hospital. The residents-in-charge
of this club educate the patients afflicted with Tuberculosis on the disease.
i. Public Health Unit (PHU) - headed by Family Medicine Consultant, Dr.
Nalupa, it organizes and coordinates the Preventive and Promotive Health
programs in the hospital setting.
j. Rabies Control Program - initialized in 1999, the program has worked
for promotion of Rabies prevention through immunization and education
dissemination. Presently, all animal bites consulting in the hospital
care are referred to the department.
k. STOP-DEATH/HEMS Program - the acronym stands for Strategic Tactical
Operations Plan for the Prevention of Disasters, Emergencies, Accidents
and Trauma for Health / Hospital Emergency Management Staff. The primary
task of the program is to make necessary measures to prevent disasters
and emergencies as well as to prepare the hospital's staff, facilities
and resources to respond to such calls should they come.
l. Counseling Services - this is the arm of the Hospice Care program
aimed at answering the psychological needs of the patients. The program
is involved in processing of patients referred into it as well as family
meetings. It is also involved in assisting patients in terms of guiding
them in search for possible source of support for their sick beloved.
m. Community Outreach Services - the department is the hospitals prime
mover in the medical aspect of community outreach. The department sends
its doctors and staff not only to provide medical services but educational
services as well. In coordination with friends from the pharmaceutical
industry, the department also facilitates the procurement of free laboratory
examinations for a defined population.
n. Emergency Room Services - the department is tasked to manage the Emergency
Room, with Dr. Audan as consultant coordinator. The hospital ER complex
is now a model for other DOH-retained hospital. Regular ER audit conferences
are held to ensure quality care.
o. Family Medicine Ward - this facility is one of a kind in the whole
country. The Family and Community Medicine Program of the Davao Medical
Center is the only program, which maintains its own ward and manages its
own patients based on the scope of its competencies.
p. Outpatient Services - the department is tasked to manage the operation
of the ambulatory section of the hospital. Total Quality Management principles
are applied through regular quality circle meetings and the solicitation
of feedback from our external and internal customers. With an increasing
number of patients and with undermanned clinics, it is working hard to
cope up with the demands and offer quality care.
q. Personal Health Services - this is ained at the occupational and safety
program for hospital personnel. The department acts as the gatekeeper
and the copany physician. It provides pre-employment exam, annual physical
exam and health services to hospital employees. Everyday a department
consultant is assigned at the personnel health services clinic to cater
to the health needs of the personnel and their dependents.
