FAMILY AND COMMUNITY MEDICINE
Requirements for Residency Program

To be admitted to the residency program, applicants:

  1. Should be graduates of recognized schools of medicine in the Philippines or abroad with completed internship training in any approved training hospital.
  2. Must have passed the Philippine Board of Medicine Examinees.
  3. Should possess good moral character with attitudes and values compatible with a humane person.
  4. Should pass the examination interview given by the Department of Family and Community Medicine.


Duration of Training:

The Residency training will be four (4) years.

  1. During the first year, residents will rotate in the departments of Pediatrics, Medicine, Surgery and OB-Gynecology.
  2. On the second year of training, they will pass through the departments of Pediatrics, Medicine, OB-Gynecology, Surgery and the Physical Rehabilitation section of the Department of Orthopedics.
  3. On the third year of training, they will go through Psychiatry, ENT-HNS, Opthalmology, Dermatology, Family Medicine and Community Medicine. They may also take elective courses. At this stage Hospice Care rotation is most ideal.
  4. On the fourth year of training, the residents will be assigned at the Emergency Room and the Outpatient Services. A commulative six (6) months dispersal will be done during this penultimate year of training in a location determined by the Department of Health. The dispersal may be done either on the first six or the last six months of the year.


Methods of Instruction:

  1. The residents will be given the responsibility to evaluate, diagnose and manage patients as would residents of the same year level of training do in a particular department.
  2. Stress will be more on the first contact management on all types of cases, emergency and non-emergency - traumatic, organic or emotional: handling to completion most problems they face and provide relief of suffering and maintenance of life until proper specialty assistance or facilities arrive.
  3. Residents will be evaluated periodically (didactic and clinical) on their competence and performance.
