Orthopedic Overseas
The Department of Orthopedics, in its effort to improve our orthopedic
training and service, linked up with the Association of American Orthopedic
Surgeon (AAOS) through its International Orthopedic Education Committee
(IOEC). This committee formed the Orthopedic Overseas Program through
which an overseas orthopedic consultant voluntarily join a short training
program. Dr. Fred Deal was the first volunteer orthopod and hails from
Wenachee, Washington State. Dr. Deal spent eight days with the department.
He joined us in our daily conferences and grand rounds. assisting and
demonstrating surgeries, and giving didactic lectures and discussions.
This program was temporarily put on hold due to worsening peace and order
situation in Mindanao. More and more foreign orthopedic surgeons signified
to visit our department.
In the like manner, two Filipino orthopedic surgeons, now based in the
USA, Dr. Ranulfo Gracilla from Pennsylvania and Dr. Edward Lim from Cincinnati,
Ohio have also volunteer to join the staff periodically for lectures &
special surgeries. They have also donated orthopedic implants and instruments.
