Significant Accomplishments
Physical Structure
1998 saw the completion of the newly renovated Pediatric Intensive Care
Unit which has a capacity of 16 patients. The new PICU is more spacious
with piped-in oxygen and more room for equipment such as ventilators and
monitoring devices. This year also brought into completion renovations
for Pedia Main with its improved ventilation, lighting fixtures and comfort
rooms. There is a separate room for special procedures such as IV insertions
and lumbar puncture and individual rooms for cases that need to be isolated
such as measles and tetanus.
Training, Training Facilities and Services
The Department of Pediatrics Library acquired several textbooks in Infectious
Diseases, Gastroenterology, Hematology, Pulmonology, Pediatric Procedures
and other important subspecialties which provided theoretical support
to an otherwise vast clinical exposure. An additional resident rotating
in Nursery not only improved services but also distributed the huge bulk
of work that oftentimes hinder effective learning. Guidance of a senior
Emergency Room resident likewise facilitated decision-making and management
of patients.
With the new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, the PICU guidelines were
revised to suit the set-up and make it more responsive to the needs of
patients admitted at the PICU.
