| SPECIFIC DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS:
FIRST YEAR RESIDENT:
1. Makes regular rounds on all patients admitted under the attending
service.
2. He should write clinical histories and physical examinations within
24 hours after admission of patients. In case there are medical interns
or fourth year medical students assigned under him, the latter may do
the work but that he is responsible in correcting their work.
3. Examines, diagnose and treat patients under the supervision of the
senior resident and consultant of the service.
4. Provide himself with stethoscope, tongue depressors, penlight, ophthalmoscope,
otoscope, neurologic hammer, and tape measure.
5. Shall be the first resident on call to answer the referrals.
6. Attend and participate in all conferences required by the department
at all times.
7. Go on 24 hour duty alternately with other residents. He must refer
problematic cases to a more senior member of the staff.
8. Evaluate the growth and development of infants giving anticipatory
guidance and administer immunization in the Well Baby Clinic.
9. Guide interns and medical students.
10. Submit at least one case report and start working on research paper.
11. Should be able to discuss his cases during the rounds of the attending
pediatricians.
12. Should always be courteous to his co-residents and other members of
the hospital staff.
SECOND YEAR RESIDENT:
1. Makes daily rounds with consultants, interns and other residents and
assist first year residents on his problems.
2. Be present at the delivery of an abnormal pregnancy and obtain maternal
and obstetrical history.
3. Does the discharge physical examination and give instructions to the
mother according to hospital policies.
4. Learn the skill in performing the procedures like resuscitation, umbilical
cannulation, exchange transfusion, bone marrow puncture, lumbar tap, femoral
tap, thoracentesis and abdominal paracentesis under the direct supervision
of one senior member of the staff.
5. Supervises and teaches the first year residents, interns and medical
students.
6. Goes on twenty-four hours duty rotating with other residents.
7. Monitor critically ill patients as often as the case warrants, indicating
pertinent positive and negative findings and providing optimum management.
8. Answers referral with a third year resident and consultant in other
departments.
9. Finish and submit a research paper as stated in this year.
THIRD YEAR RESIDENT:
1. Goes on twenty-four hours duty alternating with the other residents.
2. Makes teaching rounds with the more junior members of the resident
staff as well as interns and medical students.
3. Familiarizes himself with all cases more specially ill patients, attend
to their social needs, be responsible for their management under the supervision
of their attending consultants and be responsible for endorsing these
to the more junior members of the resident staff.
4. Be responsible for the following procedures: exchange transfusion,
thoracentesis, paracentesis, femoral tap, lumbar tap and other highly
skilled procedures.
5. Answer problematic cases referred to him by the more junior residents
in any of the critical areas like delivery room, nursery and pediatric
wards.
6. Supervises and teaches residents, interns and students.
7. Completes a second research paper.
FOURTH YEAR RESIDENT:
1. Be available for dispersal duringthe last six months of residency.
2. Rotate for 6 months in a subspecialty of choice.
3. Shall provide manpower in the outpatient department.
