Expectations of a Trainee in the Pediatric Training Program
FIRST YEAR RESIDENT:
- Must be proficient in the collection of historical data.
- Must be able to do a complete physical and neurologic examination
with the necessary skill, thoroughness and gentleness in all cases.
- Must be conversant with the normal patterns of growth and development
and its deviations.
- Must be proficient in the correlation and interpretation of sata as
gathered from the history and physical examination in all cases.
- Must be familiar with all aspects of Preventive Pediatrics and its
significance in a developing country.
- Regular physical check-up
- Immunization
- Advice on proper nutrition.
- Anticipatory guidance
- Health education
- Screening program
- Referring problems to specialty clinics
- Advice on responsible parenthood
- Must be congnizant of the importance of nutrition for the Filipino
child.
- Prescribe proper advice on nutritional requirements at the different
age groups
- Know the nutritional problems in the Philippines as to:
- type and incidence
- pathogenesis
- predisposing factors
- clinical picture
- Must be able to manage common problems requiring primary and secondary
care in General Pediatrics with skill and accuracy.
- Must be able to perform pediatric procedures with skill and confidence,
have a thorough knowledge of their indications, contraindications and
necessary precautions
- Must be able to detect pediatric emergencies promptly and accurately.
- Must be able to manifest initiative and resourcefulness in the care
of all his patients.
- Must submit at least one case report at the end of the first year.
- Must present at least 2 interesting /problematic cases at a staff
conference.
- Must submit one research protocol on the 9th month of his first year.
SECOND YEAR RESIDENT:
Aside from those stated for a first year resident, a second year resident
is expected to have the following:
- Must be able to manage uncommon pediatric problems requiring secondary
and tertiary care.
- Must be able to develop managerial capabilities in handling a problem:
- coordinate with members of the team in patient care.
- Seek his consultant's guidance or advice in the management of
cases.
- Must present a case or a paper in a scientific meeting. A second year
resident must submit one retrospective research paper at the end of
the year.
- Present at least one interesting/problematic case at a staff conference.
- Act as supervisory resident to junior residents, interns, and clinical
clerks; and involve himself in the teaching activities of the department
during:
- service rounds - daily rounds with consultants, junior residents,
interns, clinical clerks and nurses;
- chart rounds with team at least once a week
- sick baby and well baby clinic rotation - supervisory to junior
residents, interns and clinical clerks;
- lectures for nurses and medical students
THIRD YEAR RESIDENTS:
Aside from those stated for the first year and second year residents,
must in the fulfillment of stated objectives are:
- Be able to manage uncommon and problematic pediatric cases in the
various subspecialties, requiring tertiary care.
- Be able to rotate in 4 different subspecialties for a period of 3
months for each subspecialty.
- Maintain all his academic responsibilities on terms of his duties
or monitorship of the undergraduate students, as well as of the clinical
clerks and interns.
- Be able to submit at least one prospective scientific paper by the
end of the year. He is encouraged to collaborate in a research undertaking
with a pediatric consultant.
- Be able to present an interesting/problematic cases at a staff conference.
FOURTH YEAR RESIDENT:
The trainee MUST:
- Acquire sufficient knowledge in the field of pediatrics so that during
dispersal period on the last six months of residency, he will be fully
equipped to impart proper skills and knowledge to any primary or secondary
hospital.
- Acquire a specific interest in a particular field of subspecialty
training and rotate for six months in any subspecialty of choice.
- Be relied upon to man the outpatient department if the need arises.
CHIEF RESIDENT:
Is a fourth year resident chosen by the Medical Staff from among the
graduates of the Third year residency. Aside from those stated for the
first to third year resident, MUST in the fulfillment of stated objectives:
- Act as moderator in all regular conferences.
- Takes charge of the schedule of duties, conferences and other related
activities.
- Assumes responsibility in all matters concerning the resident staff
under the supervision of the Training Officer.
