Department Profile
The Department of Pediatrics has a total number of 12 part-time and 4
voluntary consultants headed by Dr. Liberation M. Abarico.
Among them, 10 had subspecialty training in the following fields of specialty
:
- Cardiology
- Gastroenterology
- Nephrology
- Intensive Care
- Neonatology
- Ambulatory Pediatrics
- Pulmonology
- Infectious
Two Pediatric Surgeons, under the Department of Surgery are always available
for referrals and make rounds in our department when necessary. There
are 15 regular residents presently undergoing training in the Department
of Pediatrics.
The residents rotate in all subspecialties for 3 months each with the
supervision / guidance of their respective subspecialty consultants.
A quarterly evaluation for consultants and residents is submitted to
the Chief of Clinics for the renewal of appointments.
The Department has 115 pediatric beds in the main pediatric wards, the
Nursery can accommodate 20 newborns per day and is equipped with 5 isolettes
and 1 ventilator. There is an average of 900-1000 deliveries per month
and 80-percent are roomed-in.
The general intensive care unit can accommodate 12 pediatric patients
and 4 sick neonates per day and is equipped with ventilator, CPAP, piped-in
oxygen and suction machines and other resuscitation equipments. Added
feature of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is that it has a septic,
non-septic isolation.
The treatment room on the pediatric floor is equipped to handle emergencies.

- Laryngoscope with set of endotracheal tubes
- Catheters
- Oxygen tanks
- Emergency tray with drugs
- Suction apparatus
- Ambu-bag
- Cutdown sets
- Lumbar puncture
- Nebulizing machines
A critical care unit (CIU) at the emergency room has been provided for
the department to handle pediatric emergencies. The same equipments listed
under the treatment room are available at all times.
The department holds their daily conferences from Monday to Friday which
includes Mortality and Morbidity, Case Presentations, Journal Reports,
Nephrology, Cardiology, Infectious, Neonatology conferences and other
didactics. All the residents attend and participate in all conferences
required by the department. A logbook is provided monitor the attendance
of residents as well as interns/clerks.
The Pediatric office is located at the fourth floor of the Davao Medical
Center. We have one regular secretary in the person of Ms. Mila Tandog,
who holds office Monday to Friday, 8:00 am-5:00 pm. Our office is equipped
with 1 computer , 1 typewriter and telephone.
A separate room serve as the pediatric residents call room. It has its
own 1 computer and a library which is equipped with the latest edition
of the following textbooks and journals.
